What this level means
Level 3 candidates are expected to arrive fully competent in Level 1 and Level 2 practical and theoretical requirements. Training develops advanced rescue, rigging, risk assessment and supervisory capability.
At least one year since the Level 2 assessment.
At least 1000 hours logged after becoming Level 2; Level 3 progression therefore represents at least 2 years and 2000 qualifying hours across Levels 1 and 2.
The current IRATA certificate must still be valid on assessment day.
Level 3 technicians and employers are responsible for keeping an appropriate first-aid qualification current during operational duties.

Level 3 is an upgrade route. Your current Level 2 certification must still be in date on the day of the independent assessment.

- Bring your IRATA logbook showing at least 12 months and 1000 logged working hours since your Level 2 assessment.
- Refresh the Level 2 manoeuvres and theory before the first training day.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
What you need before the course
- Identification card or passport.
- A current IRATA certificate that remains valid on assessment day.
- At least one year since the Level 2 assessment and at least 1000 working hours logged after becoming Level 2.
- The logbook should be presented to the lead trainer at the beginning of the course.
- Level 3 technicians should maintain an appropriate and current first-aid qualification for operational duties.
- Candidates should be physically fit, with adequate strength, agility and coordination and an appropriate attitude to work at height.

AFTER SUCCESSFUL ASSESSMENT
What a Level 3 technician can do
- Understand and implement rope-access procedures, method statements, associated risk assessments and the principles of IRATA’s safe system of work.
- Identify situations where other access methods such as MEWPs, work restraint or fall-arrest systems may be more appropriate.
- Perform rescue from rope-access manoeuvres and situations.
- Undertake equipment inspection after becoming Level 3.
- May be appointed as a rope access safety supervisor when the employer confirms the necessary supervisory competence; Level 3 also carries advanced rescue and planning responsibilities.
